Johnny Thunder Horse Rocca is a member of the Bear Clan, of the Southern Band Tuscarora Indian Tribe in Bertie County NC.

Although we cannot divulge how he came to be known as Thunder Horse. It can safely be said his Ancestors are tied to Grandfather Thunder. Just listen and you will be able to hear Thunder Horse rumbling.

The Southern Band Tuscarora Tribe were once members of the mighty Tuscrora Confederacy that encompassed much of NC. North to south from Emporium VA to the Cape Fear River in NC , and east to west from the coastal plains of NC to the piedmont region.

The Southern Band Tuscarora are of Iroquoian dialect. We are a matriarchial society and the majority follow our mothers Clans, although unlike our northern cousins, we do accept members from their patrilineal side as well. Because of our strong family ties it is in impossible to remove members because their mother may be of a different Nation. That would effectively complete the genocide of our people. The Southern Band Tuscarora Tribe are the descendants of those Tuscarora that did not migrate north during the 1700's. And of those that may have started north, but stopped and would go no further. So they came back home.

And we are the Onkwehonweh-the first people-Tuscarora. Our northern cousins, members of Six Nations, are now called the Haudenosaune-people of the Longhouse.

The Southern Band Tuscarora Tribe has Seven Clans & follow the Longhouse Traditions. And are governed by their own Constitution, therefore they do not fall under the subjugation of Six Nations, nor abide by the Great Law.

Each Clan has either a Clan Chief or and Clanmother representative for their respective Clans.
